Lotus Pillow Product Review
While on a trip to New Hampshire several years ago, I stopped into a small artisan shop filled with beautiful handmade crafts. There were art objects in all mediums, and I was overwhelmed by the creative items I saw. The most memorable was a uniquely shaped pillow, called a lotus pillow, which was made to support a person during yoga and meditation. The pillows were piled high in one room of the shop, and they were all brightly colored and made from a durable, wide-waled corduroy. I remember sitting on one that day and finding it unbelievably comfortable!
When I sit on the floor to do yoga or meditate my legs fall asleep, and it is challenging for me to keep my spine in a correctly aligned position. Because I often teach my patients simple relaxation techniques, this discomfort has been a big problem for me. Last month, I decided to order several lotus pillows to see if they helped.
When they arrived, I started to use them right away. I found that the firmness of the filling, and the pillow’s design make it incredibly relaxing to sit on. You can stack several pillows for greater height. The pillows even have a convenient carrying handle, and are scotch-guarded to help make them easier to clean.
When I contacted Janet about highlighting the pillows on this website, I asked her how she came up with the design. She responded “I am a quilter by trade, so I work with squares and different shapes all the time. It occurred to me one night (while I wasn’t sleeping, as most of my projects do) that I could make a pillow in a star shape using squares. I also realized I could add depth to it by adding a square on the ends. I worked with several different types of fabrics and stuffing to find the right combination for stability and comfort. I wanted the pillow to support my legs, back and spine all at the same time while meditating, relaxing, or just sitting. I gave a lot of consideration to the palette of colors that were available as well. I wanted to offer a rainbow of choices so the pillows would be as pleasing for the eye as they are for the body. Once I had the design made, I handed out a few pillows to family and friends who practiced yoga on a regular basis. With their feedback, I was able to create the final design. The result is what you see pictured above.”
